National park Sutjeska is the oldest and the greatest national park in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is known as a true pearl of Bosnia. It includes Sutjeska river, primeval-forest Perućica as well as parts of mountains Maglić (2386 MASL – the highest mountain in Bosnia), Volujak, Vučevo and Zelengora. In 2000, National park Sutjeska was classified into Category II of IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), due to its natural resources and treasures. National park Sutjeska is the most diverse complex of ecosystems in Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of the most diverse ones in the entire south-eastern Europe. Entire park abounds with beautiful and diverse landscapes – from large valleys, forests, vast grasslands to great mountains. Zelengora alone includes eight glacier lakes, the so called “mountain eyes”. In addition, here, you can find a number of deep river canyons of Sutjeska, Hrčavka and Jabučnica. Wildlife is very rich with a great number of very rare plants including some endemic species. Perućica (1434 ha), the greatest rain- forest of Europe, is located in the heart of this national park.
